Always a sign of great customer service - blame the customer. I know it could just be a poor and hasty choice of words, but saying "I don't know what happened here, but..." is just as accurate and far less insulting.
The only question I would leave here is--does it normally take a few days for miles to be redeposited?

Well, redepositing miles on United is instantaneous. At least, it has been for me, as a UA 1K. The phone agents have refunded my miles instantly while I'm on the phone canceling the award. I fear this is another "change" I won't like if we're stuck with the CO reservations system.
