How strict is US w/ throw-away tickets ?

I'm thinking about 3 throw-away tickets w/them for a trip SLC-PHX (haven't done this before)

It would actually only be a 25 min. connection, so maybe we'll miss the PHX-LGB segment and ask for a full refund
