1. supermarkets - use amex blue cash preferred. 6% cash back, $75 annual fee with $100 bonus cash back at sign up. if you spend $1250/year, you break even with the $75.
2. gas - penfed visa - 5% cash back. you have to join some sort of group which could cost you $10-$20 for joining.
i know there are several other cards offering 2-3pts/dollar spent for drugstores/restaurants, etc, but any that stand out for specific type of spending like the 2 mentioned here?
also, you'd have to forecast how much you spend on groceries every year to make the blue cash worth the cost over using a non fee card.
I've had the blue cash preferred for about six weeks and already earned $200 + in cash back. $100 came from AMEX for spending $500, the other came from my own spend, including buying gift cards at supermarkets. I originally calculated I would save about $500 a year with this card. I'm now guessing more like $750 a year, using it mostly for gas and groceries. If I was shopping for a family (I'm single), I could save much more with this card.
