Is the best way to find flights by calling the airline or searching online?
Step one - you need to join the relevant FF program, in order to have somewhere to transfer the MR points into miles.

Assuming you use CO (if you can get availability, that's a great TLV option - as is AC, both have very nice business class seats on that route) then join CO's program (and/or AC).

Step Two - Once you have done that, check availability and choose the flights you would like. CO will actually hold your seat for you for a day, if you tell them you are going to be using MR points to exchange into miles.

Step Three - Once you have a reserved miles booking, go online (or on the phone) and transfer the MR points to CO. It should be almost instantaneous, normally.

Step Four - Once the miles have been transferred, call up (or login) to CO and finalize the free ticket, pay the taxes, etc etc.

Step Five - Enjoy the trip, and be grateful you didn't pay $1800 to endure 13 hours each way in a cramped/uncomfortable/dirty seat in the back :-)
