Don't hold your breath about that Adelaide-Melbourne train ride, fairly ordinary I think. Wait a few years and save up for the Ghan (currently Adelaide to Alice Springs) which is being extended to Darwin. Now that will be a train trip! The track is already over half finished and quite an engineering feat.</font>
I would LOVE to ride the Ghan, not only because from a service perspective it is truly one of the finer modern day rail experiences out there, but also because I really enjoy Alice Springs and Darwin.

As for waiting a few years, well - I'd have to do that even if The Ghan were serving Darwin today! A First Class sleeper to Alice Springs is already quite expensive. To do the run all the way to Darwin, I'd need to start saving now for a ride two years down the line!

I realize "The Overland" hardly offers scenery that anyone might call "breathtaking", but it's a new train for me and that in itself will make it pretty exciting, especially in "Golden Kangaroo Class".

P.S. I see you live in Melbourne. Perhaps I could shout you a beer sometime if our schedules permit. Drop me a line at my email if ya want.
