How to recover old and expired Alaska Mileage Plan Miles

Hey guys,

I just wanted to share an experience that I had about 30 minutes ago with an AS CSR.

I use to travel PDX-SFO for a job I once had. I banked as many AS miles as I could doing that. But eventually the job went away and so did my miles earning ability. I used some miles for redemption here and there and eventually let about 7,500 miles expire (I know, I know, it's a shame ) because I had not yet heard of FlyerTalk. This was about 2.5 years ago.

Yesterday I received the AS Visa 40K card that I had applied for at the recommendation of many FTers. Here's the thing though, the Mileage Plan number on the new card (9 digits) did not match my old plan number (8 digits). So I called up an AS CSR to ask for my accounts to be merged because I didn't want two log-ins floating around out there. And guess what, she told me the ~7,500 miles from my old account would be in the new account when I set up a new log-in for that! ^ I was pleasantly surprised to say the least.

I've had the old Mileage Plan account setup on Awardwallet and Yodlee for the longest time so I know those had previously expired and were not populating into those tools (always showed 0 miles before.) This tells me that if you have an old account with expired miles, you can potentially bring those miles back to life (Arrrrrrrrghhhh, Frankenstein!!!!!) for free by creating a new Mileage Plan account and merging them into it. I just checked Awardwallet and they are there now. Awesome right?

I could be completely wrong and crazy here and perhaps the miles never did expire. Or perhaps there was a reporting problem with Awardwallet and Yodlee that's lasted for the last 2 and a half years. But I do know that at least 2.5 years had gone by since I last added or used anything from the old AS Mileage Plan account.

Hopefully someone else can benefit from this piece of info. Thanks and Peace!
