FWIW, I am travelling WTP from DFW to LHR, and there was no availabilty for either leg when I flew, however when in Dallas, I checked again 3-4 days before the return flight, and MFU availabilty came up, so I rang BA, and used miles to upgrade the return leg, for 12,500 miles, and a £47 tax charge.
