This is good advice. I have had several FA's on domestic China flights tell me I must shut my smartphone off. I just show them the screen of a game and tell them "it's a tablet not a phone" and they go away. But apparently at least some of the FAs are of the opinion that there is a rule that prohibits use of phones even when in airplane mode.

Even if such a policy exists, I'm willing to bet that it is so poorly worded that it could be interpreted a number of different ways. Refer back to my advice in post #2: "this isn't a phone, mam." They will be fine.
