British Airways - award change fee
I have a scenario as far as award change fees that I am looking for some feedback from some of the more experienced BA travelers on this forum.
Here is my scenario and what happened to me this morning. Seven months ago I booked award tickets for my wife and I, as four one way one tickets frrom Phoenix to Athens in World Traveler (2 seperate reservations, one outbound for both of us, one return for both of us).
Then, back in December I obtained some additional mileage and so I opted to change our outbound flight to Club World and also change our destination to London. I called in to British Airways and paid the fees to make these changes (which I actually believe to be a cancellation and re-booking, correct?) and had my new reservation set.
Last night I go on to BA.com and see that award seats have opened up for Club World from PHX to LHR for one day prior to scheduled outbound flight later this week. So, having read BA's rules and the forum information on here as well, I assume that I can change my reservation to this earlier date as I am still a few days away from either of these flights and I am just making a time and date change. Of course, on BA's website, when I try and change my flight date to my new date that shows availability I keep getting an error message.
This morning I called into the Executive Club when they opened and explained my situation and a rather rude agent tells me that there is availability to change my flight to leave a day earlier, but it will cost $70 per person as any changes cost $70 and then puts me on hold. I then pull up the BA change rules and let him know that changes on BA.com are free, but since the website will not let me change the ticket due to errors, I am hoping he will waive the fee.
The agent then goes on to tell me that since I changed my original reservation months ago (and again remember I paid to change to it back then), that I can no longer make any new changes to this reservation online and that is why I have to pay the $70 fee. I told him that I thought that was inaccurate and that I am given the option to change the reservation dates online, but the ba website is the issue. He then went on to tell me that I can not barter with him, then refused to let me speak to anyone else and finally before we ended our conversation told me, good luck, but you will be calling us back and paying us $70 if you want to change the date of this flight.
My apologies for the long post, but I wanted to cover all of the bases. But am I wrong in thinking that I should be able to change the date of this flight to one day earlier if nothing else changes on the flight? I have never heard any rules that you can't change the date of an award ticket after you have previously paid money to completely change an award ticket?
Am I missing something and if I am not, how do I fix this? If I call back today, I am afraid that I may get the same agent, who when I asked to speak to a supervisor told me that "it doesnt work that way, so I will just make you hold until you hang up."
Thanks for the help and I am excited to take my trip, but hope I dont get berated on my flight as I was on the phone today.
