I've always found that it only counts as a stay if you charge something to your room so you receive a folio - not sure if that's the deciding factor but I've done that three times now and each one has increased my nights stayed on my account.
it counts as a stay whether something is charged to the room or not....
the only difference is that the stay will get updated automatically if you have a charge on your folio....if you don't then you will have to call to get it updated....
i've normally found that its just easier to charge something small to my room....a bottle of water or a phone call....its not a perfect system but the $1-2 charge is nothing compared to the time i'll spend chasing the stay down with hilton....my time is worth much more than that....
