I got a doctors letter (free of charge) as I caryy huge amounts of pills as well as a pen and needles. Have been all over the world and have not been questioned once about the pen and needles. I always put a few in my carry on luggage in case the main luggage does not arrive. I do not believe the 6mm needles show up on scanners.
