To be clear, i have heard of people getting upgraded when the back is oversold,and obviously, the people with highest status will be the ones to get it,but it's so exceedingly rare that you can't remotely say it's a benefit of status.

People without any membership in the FF program at all have sweet talked a counter or gate agent into upgrades too, probably about the same success rate.
