A bigger problem you have with separate itineraries is that in case the luggage is delayed, it will not be forwarded to you.
Linking itineraries really does not accomplish much with two separate tickets as their is a clear boundary of responsibility between the two airlines. If the delay in first flight makes you or worse, your baggage, miss the second, you are in a soup. If the two tickets are issued in conjunction, you have some protection. When two or more itineraries are conjuncted, one of the conjuncting airlines validates the conjuncted itinerary before the ticket is issued. Conjuncted itineraries can be and usually are more expensive than separate itineraries.
I have travelled on separate itineraries and have never had a problem, but I also know people who have been stranded for days when their first flight was late.
This is not recommended for a a woman traveling with a child.
