There may well be some airlines that will charge the YQ on infant fares though..
Thanks everybody -- I'm getting deeper into the technicalities than I thought! Just got the fare breakdown from United, infant in lap fare comes out at about $3,100 +$200 in taxes and fees.
Oddly, the fare basis is C. Here's what they sent me:
Base fare: 3188.00 USD
Tax/Fee/Charge: 32.60
88.50
US
XT (Federal excise taxes)
Total: 3309.10 USD
Booking Code: Fare Basis C
FC END ROE 1.0 XT 5.00XA 7.00XY 5.50YC 62.00YQ 9.00XFIAD4.5PHL4.5

Is it worth calling them to check? What's YQ?
