I have to attend a meeting in the morning in SFO before I leave on my CX flight.
I would say there's a reasonable chance you'll get leniency in PDX on the checked baggage; could you limit yourself to two 50 pound bags, so you're just asking for free bags, not free, heavy bags? I think you're chances are better if you show it's the only option to make your connection...but all of that is YMMV.
I might be able to, or I might not.. One of my bags is already at 60lbs, the other is getting there.
I think on the return, the key is checking your bags all the way through in HKG. If they are interlined to AS, there are very few opportunities for anyone to assess the fee.
That's what I'll do.. The same as the outbound from PDX..
As for your carryon - I'd be prepared to gate check part of it, especially if you are not on a mainline AS flight, and especially if you do not have status that is going to allow you to board early. If you can get it through security, no fees.
Are you in F on the AS segments (again, not even sure this is mainline service PDX - SFO)?
Yes I am in F on all segments on a mainline.
