I appreciate all the replies. I realize of course that I could have done all this by phone but I was hoping it could be resolved in writing. When writing, it's easier for me to explain myself, the agents have time to research their answers and everything is documented. In my letter to Spanair, I did mention that I will be happy to work with them to find a solution that is acceptable for both sides. I even suggested some alternatives to my final destination (EWR) in case it would help them to rebook me. I did not go as far as offering specific routes, I figured a customer support agent could do that on his/her own. It looks to me like they are just trying to throw the problem back to Expedia. When I turn to Expedia, they will most likely try to put the responsibility back on Spanair as they've done before and so my problem might fall between the cracks. I will try to contact a supervisor on Expedia and I will update on the results but I have a bad feeling that this is going to turn into a long and agonizing game of ping pong. I at least hope that this thread will serve as a warning to some of you and make you think twice before doing business with Spanair and Expedia.
