I have certainly bought two tickets on the same flight on numeorus occasions and then go on to cancel one of the two. Usually two have overlapped for several hours, sometimes up to 23 hours just before the 24 hour cancellation period elapses. Never has the airline cancelled either. Indeed I just did so this week.

The circumstances I have done this are where I am uncertain about my plans e.g. considering two separate flight options but a common inbound or outbound, consideration of a simple vs more complex itinerary that both start with same flight or where I am getting reimbursed for a coach fare but wish to fly BF (as will need evidence of the coach fare)
