They are breaking the rules. If their rules state that the customer can choose from 3 options, and they take one of those options off the table, they're not following the rules that are supposed to apply to both parties.
I agree with you that the OP should come up with a couple of acceptable alternative flights before calling. Make it as easy as possible for them, and maybe they'll do the right thing.
