I've never had a problem in India. Some of high-end hotels have security checks and they are often illogical or cursory to the point of being a little silly, but never abusive. I've also stayed at perfectly reasonable places that didn't have any. I've never had a bad security experience at an Indian airport, either.

Silly, I can handle. Threats and sexual assault by government employees - not so much.

Like exbayern, I have no concerns traveling alone in India. But traveling in the US is days of stress and nightmares and bad sleep and upset stomach. I'm finding Canada and lots of driving a better (if more expensive) option, when I have to be there for family reasons.

Professionally, I won't travel to the US and a large majority of my female colleagues (and many of my male colleagues) also actively avoid it.
