As I understood it, almost everybody gets a 6-month, multiple-entry visa but that doesn't in itself get around the 2 month rule.
The primary solution is to get dispensation from the High Commission in the third destination country before you re-enter. But this seems to be discretionary. If the third country is the UK for example, you have to submit
this form and state than your return is for an emergency situation. I believe the situation is more flexible for neighbouring countries but I wouldn't like the uncertainty.
Fortunately if you take your itinerary to VFS they will request a special endorsement. We went to the Maldives, via Colombo, and didn't want to have to risk a visit to the Male High Commission. So I got "Re-entry from Sri Lanka" on my visa, but some of the immigration officials were still a bit difficult at first and I would have preferred it to say "Re-entry from Sri Lanka within 60 days" since that's the specific additional permission.
The OP might also be able to get a transit visa issued in SL/Nepal but I don't know if that gets around the stupid rule.
