I think what the cabin crew did was correct, though I'd suggest that the majority of interlopers in situations such as the OP described are not people chancing it, but people mistakenly sitting in the wrong place, or getting flustered at the last minute rush to the plane and taking the cabin crew's "please get to a seat quickly" comment too literally.
