Roundtrip JFK to Berlin TXL, both flights were somewhat delayed (both under an hour), but generally smooth and painless.
We paid extra for side-exit seats in economy, and were surprised by how much of the physical/visual space in front of our seats were taken up by a near-constant line of people lined up for the toilets. Apparently there were no toilets available at the rear of the plane, so all economy passengers needed to use the mid-cabin facilities, and logically lined up/mingled/lingered outside them. The video screen for the bulkhead seats was mounted on the ouside wall of one of the toilets, and was very often blocked (unintentionally) by people waiting for the facilities. The "window" seat of the pair in the exit row had restricted legroom due to its position relative to the exit door, but unlike every other bulkhead seat I had ever sat at, placing one's knee or leg on the door settee was strictly prohibited on AB (monitored by flight attendants in both directions).
Food was identical in both directions, and was not particularly good, and only one small glass of wine during dinner was complimentary (additional drinks could be purchased throughout the flight).
One oddity at the start of the Berlin - JFK flight ---- after pushback when the engines were started, the overhead cabin lights began flickering in sequence, as if every flourescent bulb up and down the plane required a new starter/regulator. After 5 - 8 minutes of this, the lead flight attendant had the wits/wisdom to turn off all of the overhead cabin lights (it was, after all, a bright sunny day above the clouds). The most unusual aspect of this was when the flight attendant sitting just in front of us for takeoff (in the jumpseat by the exit door) assurred us that the flickering lights up and down the plane was "quite normal". We honestly couldn't determine whether this was her very first flight, whether she was crazy, or whether some of AB's long-haul 330s have serious electrical deficiencies. In any case, the overall flight experience was otherwise entirely unremarkable --- exactly what we like when traveling in Y.
