Excellent response, Globaliser! Your point about checking Expertflyer was spot on: when using a UK point of sale, "N" class really is closed.
I also had no idea that one can't MFU "N" or "S" class, so Expedia it is! (The marginal amount of points gained by my first reason is negligible in dollar terms.)
