In a similar line of thinking, there was a recent story (I don't remember where, but I read it last week. Not TSA related.) about an employee who asked his boss for a reduced schedule because he had to help his wife through her cancer treatments. The following morning he had a note on his desk that he was fired. The reason was that his availability had changed and the company needed someone who was available 24/7. I'm guessing the TSA would have fired the guy too, since he was hired as a full timer but had a family emergency?
If your friend worked for a large company there may be recourse available.
Family Emergency Leave Act protects those employees in companies of certain size.
