In a similar line of thinking, there was a recent story (I don't remember where, but I read it last week. Not TSA related.) about an employee who asked his boss for a reduced schedule because he had to help his wife through her cancer treatments. The following morning he had a note on his desk that he was fired. The reason was that his availability had changed and the company needed someone who was available 24/7. I'm guessing the TSA would have fired the guy too, since he was hired as a full timer but had a family emergency?
I will agree with you that this is an issue that is addressed better at some businesses than others. The problem will boil down to management at that location and perhaps lawyers/lawsuits working things out to lay the groundwork for future situations of a like nature. Many times, the first couple of transgender individuals wind up getting short changed in order to set a precedent for others that follow. This may wind up being something like that. All around it is a fairly brutal and touchy subject that may take a while to sort out. I just wish equitable treatment for all people, and perhaps this will wind up being an incident that can help others in the same situation in the future.
