There is really no way to avoid the taxes and fees as they are assessed by the respective governments of the countries you are flying to/from. There were times when less taxes were assessed to those flying out of YVR (Vancouver, BC), but that is no longer the case.

Have you looked at award availability for your dates? If you haven't, be aware that the "low" awards may not be available and that you can't have an award ticket with both AA and DL segments and that DL awards require 60,000 miles per ticket.
