Pulling this back up. Has anyone had success with acquiring 2 seats in J award (what seems to be their standard number per flight) then acquiring an additional one later down the line?

I'm looking at lots of flights coming up across the pond that have plenty of J availability but not a single award ticket in sight, and am worried that they don't release excess inventory even on the day of flight.
