happened to me ORD-FRA a few weeks ago. Was in the RCC waiting for my flight (flying C, waitlisted for F) and I was called to the front, they said GS had called and had me op-upped to F from C because C was oversold. I asked if my SWU would be used and she said nope, it would not be deducted because an op-up trumps SWU. Not sure if it was a GS thing, or a general thing, but that's what I was told.
Waitlisted again this Friday, so I hope it happens one more time, C is sold out!
Same happened to me earlier this week from ORD to FRA... was cleared C to F using a SWU a few days before the flight. I check my account after the flight and lo and behold the SWU was back in my account. To boot the aircraft was a new config 777 (i had upgraded expecting the old config)
