When I book my business travel through our corporate agency it shows both AA Y fares and Y-UP fares at the same price side by side. I know exactly what I am buying when I chose the Y-UP option. Booking the same DL itinerary, you really have to know what to look for to avoid putting yourself in a position where you could get burnt.
The lack of training of front line employees makes it worst. In my experience you are better in an IROPS condition on a Y fare then you are on an A/P fare.
This is no different than selling premium fuel at a gas station with fine print that says, "93 octane. small print (If the 93 octane tank is empty when you fill up you will actually get 87 octane gas)".
While not a fan of big gov't regulations I really hope DL gets their a$$ kicked over this deceptive practice one day soon.
