@Ancien Maestro: The YUL-YYZ is part of an Aeroplan award booking (SAN-CDG-BCN-YYZ-SAN) where YUL is a connection between BCN-YYZ. The YYZ-YUL was indeed booked as a one-way paid ticket.

@Santander: Thanks! That's a great idea. I'll plan on doing that. It's been a while since I've done a same-day change fee - I can't remember but would paying the change fee (to switch myself to the later YYZ flight) qualify me standby for the earlier flight out of YYZ at no extra cost? - or could I be stuck paying a second same-day change fee (one to change to the later flightout of YYZ, and another free if I actually standby and get on the earlier flight after all)?

If things are looking bad in YUL before you leave for YYZ, you could always just pay the change fee and get yourself on the flight an hour later out of YYZ. If you happen to make it on time to YYZ you could always do a same-day standby and if not, you'll still be back in YUL at dinnertime.
