Good point about crew engagement; I suppose it must get quite dull in the cruise. One 747 captain described this to me (on one of Little Fruitcake's post landing cockpit visits) as 11 hours of boredom for two moments of excitement.

I asked him why he didn't change to short haul to do more take offs and landings. He said it didn't pay well enough. A 777 captain, to the same question, said he didn't want to spend his working days catching up from delays earlier in the day.
