Part of me doesn't really see the issue. They're 5- what are they going to do??

The other part says it's inappropriate. Takeoff & landing are intense stages of flight. If something had gone wrong, the kids could have become frightened and done something to distract the flight crew.

Basing myself on the precautionary principle, I'd err on the side of caution & say that it is inappropriate.
