In addition to the Autostrada route, you can also get to Bolzano via Lago di Como. Once you cross the frontier, you can take the SS340 on the left side of the lake. This would take you through Chiasso, Como, and then on to any of the sights or towns you wish to see on that side of the lake. This is a two-lane road, but very scenic.

You can also access the right side of the lake via the SS38 which is more of a freeway-type road. Faster, but scenic in it's own right.

Both roads then merge into the freeway of SS39 at the headwaters of the lake, heading up through Sondrio, and past Tirano. At Teglio you turn on up to the SS42 crossing though the mountains and ski resorts. Continue on until Mezzolombardo, where you connect onto the Autostrada 13, or the A22, just outside and in view of Bolzano. Longer yes, but far more scenic. German, also starts here.

A word of warning on Lake Como. Many have been know to fall in love with the lake while travelling through the area. One we know decided to halt his 30 day vacation there, and now owns a small Rustica with a lake view. Beware the Lario allure !
