What happens if you can't go through the scanner due to a medical condition. In my case, I have an insulin pump. The manufacturer told me not to go through the scanners. Taking it off and putting it through the x-ray machine is even worse, so that's not an option. I'm not planning on going to the UK anytime soon, but I'm curious on what would happen.
I also wear an insulin pump and have been through LHR several times with it. Every time but one I have just had a pat-down after the WTMD alarmed (which it always does with mine), with an explosive swab test.
On one occasion the explosive swab alarmed twice and after discussion with the supervisor I agreed to a scan through the microwave scanner. I saw no X-ray body scanners in T5.
When I went through T1 I just a pat-down, no explosives scan and the agent was the most courteous and careful I've ever had. Also no lines whatsoever.
