I don't know if there is a formal policy, but I tend to believe the notion that they don't select someone who is visibly unable to use the scanner.

That is due to my admittedly very limited experience (limited because although I fly from many UK airports, most don't have scanners in very active use if at all)

To the OP's question - I frankly didn't read the entire post due to the font selected which made it difficult for me to read. But AMS was mentioned up thread and they definitely permit opt outs.

I tried to keep the scanner in rest of world thread up to date but there are so few reports here that it wasn't really worthwhile. If anyone has more specific info or thinks it is a worthwhile exercise I can try and update it again (and perhaps include the info about non-shoe removal around the world as well)
