I am not surprised, for two reasons:

1) historically 3K connections from Oz have not been smooth (ie required separate bookings), although that is changing as both QF and JQ are now selling through connections from Australia.
2) Cabin fever. As you would know Singapore is a small country. Very small. It's not so easy to take a quick escape from the city as urban dwellers in Australia can ... to the Blue Mountains/Great Ocean Road/Sunshine Coast/ Barossa/Margaret River etc. (and quick escapes to Malaysia or Bintan are the land based options). .... so LCC's have a certain appeal for many people as a way of getting out of Singapore for a break.
