Ordeal in redeeming Qmiles for United flight
Made request via the website for SFO to Washington DC but was always getting that the requested flight was not available. Called up the main customer service at Doha and was able to get a reservation (with a valid reservation number). A tip I figured out was that if a flight is available for 12500 United points on the United site then Qatar can make a reservation for you (though it will cost you 25000 Qmiles depending on distance) However this reservation got canceled due to some goof up on their end. Called up the main center twice and sent emails. Eventually got another reservation. They called me at 3am in the morning and asked for the passport details for the person traveling. Didn't mind the call at 3am since the it looked like the ticket was going to work out eventually.
There was an email saying the ticket would be issued but I would have to go to the local Qatar airways office with my id ( a half day journey to the heart of DC). However reading another post on this forum it mentioned they would issue the ticket electronically so I was hopeful.
First call to US office (1-877-777-2827): Answers after 15mins on the phone, says to call back after 2 hours since he doesn't know the taxes and has sent a message to the main office.
Second call to US office: Answers after 30mins on the phone. Person asks for the reservation number and puts me on hold. Cuts the call after making me wait for another 15mins.
Third call to US office: Answers after 20 mins. Eventually got a responsible person.. he does a lot of work and comes back with tax amount of $235 or something.. more than the actual cost of the ticket. He tries to find out whats wrong and makes me wait and eventually says he will call me back. Not sure if they would actually call me back so I went ahead and tried to get hold of the Toronto office since a previous poster said he was able to get it issued there.
Call to Toronto office: From the word go on the call, it looks like things would be handled better. Someone answer the call after 5 mins and he seems to know what he is doing. He told me taxes are $21 but by then the person from the US office calls me back. It looks like he had fixed it by the time I called the Toronto office.
Fourth call from US office: He says I have to pay $21 taxes and $25 processing fee. I give him my credit card and asked him whether the processing fee is required. I hadn't seen anybody else being charged for it (as seen on a previous post here). He goes away and comes back saying it is not required and that $25 is for changes to the ticket. He said ticket will come in 1 hour to the email id.
