abraxis:

Please don't be scared off my the other comments in this thread.
1) There is no NEX service to HND. Don't worry about lugging bags on the train.
2) Forget about a hired car. $$$
3) Don't worry about rerouting your ITN. It's a very simple connection.

Your friend is the Friendly Limo Bus!!!

Your plan:
1) Get a cart at NRT baggage claim.
2) Clear customs and push cart 20 yards to bus counter.
3) Buses for HND depart every 15 min.
4) Purchase bus ticket with credit card.
5) Push cart to bus stop number XX. (Maybe 30 yards)
6) Check bags into underbelly of the bus.
7) Arrive HND 1-1.5 hours later.
8) Store/Check Bags at HND.
9) Train/Monorail into TYO for a few hours than return to HND for flight.

It's easy, convenient, runs with clockwork efficiency. Honestly, I could do this blindfolded.

The transit via bus is definitely easier than getting bags back to your home via personal car parked in lot at SFO or Marin Airporter.

Cheers,
