It definitely could have been... but it was priced at exactly EUR1,000 which seemed too round of a number to have been a fare differential. If it makes a difference, the ticket I was on was technically Lufthansa, and the flight from MUC-JNB was a codeshare on SA metal. I had travelled in from London on LH and at the connecting gate at MUC I asked to pay for an upgrade. They referred me to the Lufthansa ticketing desk and that's where they issued the new boarding pass and where I paid.
