Seemingly Unexplainable Flight Cancelations
Hi,
Bear with me, as I fly almost solely on United. This past weekend, Friday, 6/10/11 there was a big group of us flying to MCI for a wedding. We all booked our flights individually...Some of us from MDW-MCI on WN, others from ORD-MCI on AA and UA. There was some weather in the area Friday morning that forced some delays, including my non-stop UA flight.
My friend was flying on American and by 9:00 AM Friday morning, they canceled his ticketed 11:15 AM flight as well as the rest of the AA flights to MCI for the day.
They explained that it was due to weather - How / why would the airline know that the weather at 7:00 PM is going to be too poor to allow any flights? Mind you, my flight on United was delayed two hours, but I still got there and to my knowledge, United did not cancel any flights. My friend ended up driving to MDW and flying on Southwest because he had to get there and AA couldn't do anything until the 11th.
I had one other instance of AA canceling flights without reason - Sunday, 5/22/11 - DFW had some bad weather roll through and the airport shut down around 7:00 PM. A few hours later, the airport finally reopened and I was on my way to ORD by way of United. However, AA had canceled all of their flights for the evening.
This isn't supposed to be a United vs. American debate, just a comparison of two similar experiences with opposite outcomes. For the AA frequent fliers, any thoughts on this?
