The F stands for First, as in "The First Circle", by Solzhenitsyn (borrowing from Dante's Inferno).

The best thing is, if you can, book a flight on an Embraer 170 or 175 and not go there. I have had the assigned gate be wrong by the whole length of the terminal. Got my cardio that day!
