This is an idea I've thrown about before, but I'm going to float it again...

So the thread regarding the longest upgrade list got me thinking (again) about Delta and their current practice of handing out status like candy.

I'm sure that airline status engenders brand loyalty, so I understand why Delta is handing out status like crazy. But the fact of the matter is that I made FO last year purely on BIS miles and losing an upgrade (or exit row seat) to someone who just took out an AMEX card is beyond infuriating.

So... Delta, if you're going to hand out status for free, it's time for you to create another tier of status. Call it "Bronze" Medallion or something. I'm sure sure you can come up with the right mix of benefits and naming. Just find some way to differentiate those of us who actually spend time BIS from those who just have nice credit scores.
