It would be ok to apply in your home country, but you will need to demonstrate strong ties to home country(India) since your American work visa is expiring.
They need to be sure you will only be visiting and not looking for work in Schengen states. Be prepared to show financial and other ties to home country.

It is always tough to obtain a visit visa for another country if a work visa somewhere else is close to expiry.
