I agree in principle that EK's not responsible but with what your saying it sounds like its not a good idea to book a hotel / rent a car or make any travel plans/bookings in advance at the destination because at the end of the day EK's not responsible if it doesn't get us to our destination at the original time EK was suppose to (for whatever reason) and we end up paying all the charges etc.....

Not to berate or say "I told you so" but because this is a public board, the important lesson here is not to book multiple separate itineraries, but to book through one principle (originating) carrier. That can take time and it may be best to use and pay a TA, but it happens time and again to folks booked on separate itineraries. Sometimes a carrier takes pity, but not often.
