The only exception might be if:

- You can do free same day changes with your second carrier. (E.g. C*G.)

- It will become obvious that you will miss your connection when you are somewhere that you can do something about it. (E.g. an airport within 24 hours of the second flight, rather than half way across the Atlantic out of phone coverage.)
