I should add that not ALL trains have smoking cars - but every GNER train seems to. It's worth checking out each train line for where you want to go - and don't believe BritRail - they are the ones who told me that none allowed smoking. Their rates are good I think for an unlimited pass - but they mush some of their info.. they also charge you for reservations - and we found at the rail station at Kings Cross, we could make reservations for nothing - so I'd wait till I arrived and make all my reservations at once. Not that we ever needed one - I think if you aren't traveling on the business traveler's times, you're really fine w/out them. We usually took trains between 9:30 and 11:00 departure times and typically were almost alone in the smoking car..
