She tried to comply, even though she'd flown with this same ring in the past, and for trying to just comply, she was arrested? I truly don't get it. We've heard from the alleged TSA employees that they've let people return guns, knives, etc. back to their vehicles or the like if it's "accidentally" brought to the checkpoint in some instances, but arresting someone who offered to toss it to begin with??? Wow.
In my concealed carry class we discussed items such as these and under KY law, I do not know about New York, this is considered the same as brass knuckles which are prohibited weapons. Interestingly my CC permit allows me to carry these concealed in KY and states with a reciprocity agreement. They are as prohibited on a plane as my Glock would be.

From KRS 500.080 (4)
(4) "Deadly weapon" means any of the following:
(a) A weapon of mass destruction;
(b) Any weapon from which a shot, readily capable of producing death or other serious physical injury, may be discharged;
(c) Any knife other than an ordinary pocket knife or hunting knife;
(d) Billy, nightstick, or club;
(e) Blackjack or slapjack;
(f) Nunchaku karate sticks;
(g) Shuriken or death star; or
(h) Artificial knuckles made from metal, plastic, or other similar hard material;
