Tentseller is right that 'proper' cables have marginally lower chances of problems. On the other hand I carry a retractable cable in my 'light travel' rather than my 'full' set of cables (how sad is that! )

In all honesty any cable issue I've ever had travelling have been inside the walls of the hotel in any case - so the few feet of cable you are connecting with are very unlikely to be the margin between a good connection and an issue. - I'd go with the retractable if you can get one easily.
