Tentseller is right that 'proper' cables have marginally lower chances of problems. On the other hand I carry a retractable cable in my 'light travel' rather than my 'full' set of cables (how sad is that!

In all honesty any cable issue I've ever had travelling have been inside the walls of the hotel in any case - so the few feet of cable you are connecting with are very unlikely to be the margin between a good connection and an issue. - I'd go with the retractable if you can get one easily.
