If you used miles at the new redemption levels, I'd request a refund of 10,000 miles since you got seated in United Business.
However, he would have paid 50,000 miles r/t because SFO-ORD-BOS was on a 757, hence a domestic 'business' award. The only time they charge 70,000 miles is when you're seated in 3-class F, which wouldn't be the case for a 757 from SFO-ORD-BOS. (If it was a p.s. flight which does offer 3-class F, and he was booked in F and seated in C, yes, he could expect a refund, but that's not the case here).
