I booked a ticket for my friend from LGA-IAH back in early May with miles and my Pres Plus card. He got upgraded.

I just booked a ticket for myself going IAH-EWR with miles and my AMEX. I am not on the list. I'm speculating that one would have to use their PP Card for this to be automated. We'll see at the airport (I'm more concerned with my inbound, but there are no seats left on the flight that I want.)
